The Challenges of Stopping Illegal Peer-to-peer File Sharing

چکیده
Illegal file sharing within peer-to-peer networks has become a significant threat to the film and recording industries. Furthermore, such peer-to-peer protocols often use a significantly large amount of bandwidth relative to other protocols, complicating network management. In the past, copyright enforcement agencies have been hired to investigate users who appear to be sharing files illegally. In addition, broadband Internet service providers (ISPs) have actively throttled peer-to-peer traffic in an effort to reduce load on their networks. We observe that an “arms race” has begun between file traders and copyright holders/ISPs in which the file traders have started to develop techniques for hiding their involvement in the transfer of copyrightprotected media files. In response, the copyright holders’/ISPs’ investigative tactics are evolving to match the changing strategies. In this paper, we provide a survey of the current tactics used by file traders to hide their involvement in illegal file transfers and speculate about future strategies that may emerge on both sides of the arms race.

Peer-to-peer applications (P2P) are no longer limited to home users, and start being accepted in academic and corporate environments. While file sharing and instant messaging applications are the most traditional examples, they are no longer the only ones benefiting from the potential advantages of P2P networks. For example, network file storage, data transmission, distributed computing, and co...

Major international law-enforcement initiatives are underway to fight the distribution of illegal pornography via the Internet. In this paper we examine the role of peerto-peer (P2P) file-sharing networks in illegal pornography distribution. First, we investigate the contention that these networks are especially implicated in illegal pornography distribution. Our finding is that this convention...

Peer-to-peer (P2P) services allow users to share networked resources, notably bandwidth and content, from the edges of the network. These services have been popularized because of file sharing — particularly the sharing of unlicensed copyrighted files. Concerns about such P2P file sharing were highlighted by content owners’ recent lawsuits against individual users and P2P network operators. How...

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) File sharing Applications are responsible for a large amount of the (illegal) distribution of media content which systematically causes copyright infringements. In order to estimate a possible economical influence, it seems to be feasible to analyse the content of those systems. Firstly, the paper on hand describes theoretical P2P architectures in order to shed light on the p...

Peer to Peer network is one of the frequently used application in terms of file sharing over a global large network. In such types of network, there can exists an illegitimate peer node who will attempt to have an unauthorized access to premium digital content. As it is very difficult to catch hold of the intruder or the illegal client inside the network, the proposed system will at least attem...
